2nd Grade Newsletter ~ February 8, 2010

                                            Announcements

Kind Parents – Thanks to Mr. Cheng and Mrs. Crockerham for helping us Wednesday in the computer lab.  Thanks to Mrs. Ledford and Mrs. Crockerham

for walking with us on Fun Friday to Friendship Oak.

Kind Kids – Congratulations to Jake Messina.  He has completed an “I’m a Kind Kid” chart.  We applaud his acts of kindness.

AR 100 Point Club – Congratulations to Nick Le.  He is the newest member of the school 100 Point Club.  He joins Jaiia as the only two students in our class with 100 points. Remember my goal is that all 2nd graders make it to the 50 Point Club by the end of April so these students are really soaring (hey, they soar in other subjects as well – see the connection?)

Banana Split Party – Friday 1:00 – cafeteria The class has earned 100 compliments.  We have a chain that has a link for every compliment.  We began collecting compliments on the first day of school.  This is the earliest in the year that any prior class has earned 100 compliments.  I am so lucky to be able to teach such courteous and kind children.  If you are able to help serve or if you want to make a contribution just let me know (email).  Thanks!! You are also welcome to join us if you can.

Math Facts in a Flash – We are now working on the 14 facts.  Pull out these flash cards to practice: 4 + 10, 10 +4, 14 – 4, 14 – 10, 5 + 9, 9 + 5, 14 – 5, 14 – 9,

6 + 8,  8 + 6, 14 – 6, 14 -8, 7 + 7, 14- 7. Remember every Wednesday is a timed fact test!

Haiti Health Kits – Thank you for the combs that are due TODAY.

Chili’s Restaurant will donate 10% of your check to the “Southeastern Supports Haiti Night” Tonight!!  4 – 11 pm

Endangered Animal Projects

- At this point in the project your child should have completed the following:

__anatomy paragraph (we are printing these at school in color to hang on display with the puppet)

__index card (students placed these on class world map this week – showing me where I could find their animals – they ALL knew it!!)

__puppet (some children brought these home to enhance – these are due with the project on Wed. after Mardi Gras, Feb. 17th).

__information sheet (you can turn this in w/ the project – some students like to put this on the back of their project board – that’s up to you – just as long as I can find it.)

-If you are on schedule all you have left to do is the display – due Wed. Feb. 17th. This can be as simple as a poster board, a mobile, a diorama, a project board, etc…  I have no criteria on what to include in the display.  Any items that the child has collected relating to their animal can be part of the display (stuffed animals, books, maps, photos, handouts).  Each child will have a table area to display these other items. The student should be able to use this display when giving their oral presentation (see schedule below). It is better to have less information (in large print) than too much information.  This is for a second grader to understand and be able to read.

-Friday, Feb. 26th – Endangered Animal Fair – 1:00 – Library - We will host a fair in the library sharing our information with the school.  The highlight of the fair is when the first graders come by and see what they will be learning next year. I will help the children design and print bookmarks to handout.  Our students enjoy handing out information so if you have anything else they can hand out – thanks.

-You can look at the rubric handed out with project guidelines for more information.

- Presentations should be from 5 – 15 minutes long.  Students just need to share the most important things they have learned about their animal.  You can look at the schedule and get an idea of when your child’s presentation is.  If you have a food item to distribute at the time of the presentation then you can wait until the day of the presentation to bring to school to share. We will present by the red rocker outside our class and will begin daily at 12:00 starting Thursday Feb. 18th and ending Tuesday Feb. 23rd.

Computer Lab Help Needed – Wednesday 12:15 – 1:15

Our second graders will begin using their flash/jump drives to transfer photos from our website and word processing. We can use as much help as we can get. You don’t need to be able to come every Wed. or for the entire time, just show up when you can.

Easter Monday – We will have to make up the bad weather day on the Monday after Easter.

Valentine’s Day Candy Grams – The library is selling candy grams (50cents each) to raise money to purchase AR t-shirts.  Since most of our class will be getting these t-shirts, please support this fund raiser.  Thanks to the parents who have already ordered class sets!! Every time I send in a new order, Ms. Shawn smiles J It looks like every 2nd grader will be needing a 50 (or 100) Point Club t-shirt so it’s only right that we support this effort!!! Due Wed. Feb. 9thIf you lost the form, just send in the $ and who gets the Valentines and we can take it from there.  $12 for a class set (23 students + Mrs. T).  We are including Parker (he moved to another school). I’ll get his Valentines to him on Friday.

Young Author’s Reception  - The following second grade students will be honored at the Young Authors Reception on Feb. 9th : NonFiction – 1st place = Khobe, 2nd place = Parker; Fiction – 1st place = Sophie, 2nd place = Julia; Poetry – 1st place = Zannah, 2nd place = Kylar.

Be on the lookout for an order form.

Haiti Health Kits – Our school is participating in an effort with the university to send supplies to Haiti.  Our class has been assigned to each bring a comb.  Please do not send pocket combs or combs with fine teeth.  They need sturdy combs with large, wide teeth.  The combs are due Feb. 8th.

Endangered Animal Projects – Attached to the tests you will find your child’s rough draft of their anatomy paragraph.  Feel free to help your child improve their paragraph.  Remember to only include information that describes the animal’s anatomy.  The final paragraph is due this Friday, Jan. 29th.

-Your child should be working on answering the questions on the Information Sheet. Be sure to send the red folder to school every day.

-Last week your child worked on a paper bag puppet.  They will get the opportunity to work on them again this week.  They will also have the opportunity to draw the animal on an index card.  They will need to show me where on our map of the world that animal can be found.  Both the puppet and the index card will be sent home at the end of the week.  You can decide if you want to use these items as the finished products or if you want to improve them or even replace them.

-See presentation schedule below.  Please let me know ASAP if you need to make a change in the schedule.

-On Friday, Feb. 26th we will host a fair in the library sharing our information with the school.  The highlight of the fair is when the first graders come by and see what they will be learning next year.

Class Pet – Our class will select a stuffed animal as our class pet.  It will journey home with a different student every night and they will write their adventures in a journal.  Students are welcome to bring in a stuffed animal for us to vote on.  The animal will become property of our class so please don’t send any valuable or special animal that your child will miss. On Friday we will vote for the class pet and give it a name and it will go home this weekend with one of our students.

Easter Monday – See attached notice regarding Easter Monday and Mardi Gras holidays.  We will have to make up the bad weather day on the Monday after Easter.

                                      Assessment

This week students will be required to read three books independently (or 1 chapter book and 1 picture book).  They will also test on the selection I read aloud.

Reading – I was not pleased with the reading selection tests this week, so I gave the tests back to the students to correct.  That is why you will see two grades on the test.

Last week, I made sure that each child had at least two sources of information.   I printed info from the internet and Ms. Shawn provided some print sources (books and encyclopedias). Your child should be working on answering the questions on the Information Sheet. Be sure to send the red folder to school every day.
Happy Feet (movie) – In conjunction with our endangered animal unit and our read aloud “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” we will be watching the film “Happy Feet”.  It is rated PG due to some mild peril and rude humor.  If you would like to preview the movie, I can send it home.  If you would like your child to see the movie please indicate your permission on the weekly assessment page.

This Wednesday will be the retest.  I will count the best of the two grades. Pull out these flashcards to practice:  2 + 10, 10 +2, 12 – 2, 12 – 10, 3 + 9, 9 + 3, 12 – 3, 12 – 9, 4 + 8, 8 + 4, 12 – 4, 12 -8, 5  + 7, 7 + 5, 12 – 5, 12- 7, 6 + 6, and 12 – 6. We will also begin collecting information to answer questions on the Information Sheet. The red folders were sent home on Thursday.  Be sure to send the red folder to school every day.
Spelling – Spelling sentences are going home with tests.  They are not graded but I made comments on them.  I will collect spelling sentences for a grade every few weeks.  Every sentence should contain one spelling and one vocabulary word, both underlined. Every sentence must be at least five words long and the heading on the paper must be correct.  There will be three dictation sentences each week.  These sentences will contain both words from the past and words that second graders should be able to spell.  The students will get these sentences on the trial test.  Each sentence is worth six points.  The weekly spelling test is now worth twenty-four points.
Computer Lab Help Needed – Wednesday 12:15 – 1:15
Our second graders will begin using their flash/jump drives to transfer photos from our website and to gather information for their projects.  We can use as much help as we can get beginning next week, Wed.  2nd Grade Newsletter ~ January 5, 2010

                               Announcements
Kind Parents – Thanks to all of the parents who helped us with our Holiday Craft Celebration.   The children had a great time and walked away with a sack full of goodies.  Thank you, Suzette Alack, for coordinating this event and providing so many of the materials!
AR 50 Point Club – Congratulations to Sophie Domingue and Daniel Acosta. They are the newest members of the school 50 Point Club.  They will be joining Ms. Shawn on the AR field trip in the spring!
Math Facts in a Flash – We are now working on the 12 facts. Every Wed. will be a fact test.  We will spend two weeks on each family. We will test on Wed. January 6th and the next Wed. will be the retest. Remember every Wednesday is a timed fact test!
Endangered Animals – We will be starting this project this week.  Your child will come home with their red folder with the project guidelines. Animals chosen so far are the manatee, grizzly bear, polar bear, panda, tiger shark, Bengal tiger, bald eagle, killer whale, N. American white whale, snow leopard, white tiger, sea turtle, pelican, penguin, dolphin, red fox, panther, coral and the Hawaiin monk seal.
School Supplies – As we start the second semester of second grade, now is a good time to take an inventory of school supplies.  Many of the children have already used up their 48 sharpened pencils and/or both of their glue sticks.

                                      Assessment

AR  –  For this new six weeks, there will be two AR grades.  One will be at the end of three weeks (Jan. 22nd) and the other one will be at the end of the six weeks (Feb. 19th). This week students are required to test on two books in the zpd independently.  Remember that a chapter book = 2 picture books.  I consider it a chapter book if it is equal to one point or more.  There are some easy chapter books but they are only worth .5 (1/2) point.  I am really encouraging chapter books from now until the end of the year.

AR 25 Point Club – Congratulations to Dylan DePaula. He is the newest member of the 25 Point Club.
Math Facts in a Flash – We are now working on the 12 facts.
Every Wed. will be a fact test (not this week though).  We will spend two weeks on each family. We will test on Wed. January 6th and the next Wed. will be the retest. Remember every Wednesday is a timed fact test!
My Skills Tutor – Make plans to do this over the holidays.  It would be great if you could structure a time in your child’s schedule to practice skills.  Now would be a good time to ask Santa for a good computer your child can use for My Skills Tutor and many other applications we use at school.
Christmas Gift Ideas – We are learning how to tell time up to the five minutes.  A good gift would be a watch with a dial face. Another suggestion is keyboarding software to help your child to be a good typist.  Other suggestions include books, journals, and science kits.
Party for our 7th Grade Buddies – On Tuesday at 9:00 we will give a party to the 7th graders for helping us on a special project.  Please send any party foods you wish.  It can just be a bag of chips or candy.  If your shopping is done for the week and you don’t have anything so send, it’s okay. We are providing doughnuts and milk.  Is there anyone who can pick up doughnuts and bring them to school for 9:00 tomorrow? We have the will ($) just not the way!  It would be very kind if your child made a thank you card or a small token gift to give their buddy.
Christmas Holiday Craft Stations – On the afternoon of Thursday, Dec. 17th we will have our Christmas celebration.  The students will be rotating to five different stations where they will make holiday crafts and gifts for their family and friends. We need some volunteers to help (contact Suzette Alack).
** updated needed list: seasonal candy, holiday potpourri, holiday Ziplocs, cloth markers, candy canes, individual hot cocoa packets, mini marshmallows and Chex mix .   Send any of the above items (not all of them – just one or two). Please send by Monday the 11th so I’ll know what I need to go out and get.  Each child will need a white pillowcase.   You can either send one from home or send in $1 to reimburse Mrs. Alack (they will be painted so you won’t be able to reuse it as a pillowcase).  Please send your child with some wrapping paper, tape and ribbon/bows on Thursday.
Second Grade Christmas Traditions – We have some very special traditions in second grade.  We don’t have a “party” per se, our celebration is our afternoon of craft/gift making (12-17).  We don’t “exchange gifts” instead we bring the 23 items to the $hopping $pree (12-4).  We invite families to come and sing with us at the school sing-a-long in the library (12-18) and then to stay afterwards as we share family holiday traditions. On Tuesday the second graders will throw a “thank you” party for the seventh graders who are helping them with their holiday projects.
Christmas Sing-A-Long and Presentation of our Christmas Traditions – Immediately following the Christmas sing-a-long (Dec. 18th 8;30) **correction** the time of the sing-a-long is 8:30!! We will meet in the story theater (after the sing-a-long) and share our Christmas traditions with you. I hope you can attend. You child is buddied up with a seventh grader to help him/her with this project.
Endangered Animals – We will be starting this project when we return to school in 2010.  Please select your animal by Dec. 18th, just in case you want to work on it over the holidays! (Guidelines are on our website.) If you would like me to assign an animal to your child, I can help them make a choice. Animals chosen so far are the manatee, grizzly bear, polar bear, panda, tiger shark, Bengal tiger, bald eagle, killer whale, N. American white whale, snow leopard, white tiger, sea turtle, pelican, penguin and the Hawaiin monk seal.

                                       Assessment

AR  –  For this six weeks, there will be two AR grades.  One was at the end of three weeks (Dec. 4th) and the other one will be at the end of the six weeks (Dec. 18th).
Reading – We are finished with the reader for the first semester of second grade.  We will wait until 2010 to begin the second reader.  We will spend this week reviewing skills.
Spelling – We will take a theme test this week of 10 words from Theme 3.  The trial test will be on Wed. and the final test on Thursday.
Math- We will take the chapter test on Thursday.

                                         Reports

Accelerated Reader (AR) Student Record Report – Attached you will find the tests your child has taken last week.  I did not read any books aloud to test on so your child should have taken a minimum of three tests last week. Your child needs to take two tests  (1 chapter book counts for two picture books) independently this week.

AR 25 Point Club – Congratulations to Sarah Stant.  She is the newest member of the 25 Point Club.
Math Facts in a Flash – We will continue to work on the 11 facts. Last Wed. we took the 1st timed test on the 11 facts.  This Wed. we will take another one.  I’ll count the best grade of the two.  If your child made an “A” last week, then they don’t need to take the test this week!
My Skills Tutor – You can decide how many skills to do in a week.  I suggest that you do at least three in language and three in math.  Students who complete all 2nd grade skills will be assigned the 3rd grade skills! We will have a bulletin board to recognize these accelerated students. This is a great thing to do during the holidays!
$hopping $pree – Thanks for all of the items that were sent for our $hopping $pree.  Thanks to all the friends and family who were our cashiers.  Thanks to the many parents who sent in extra items.  We had a great time and most importantly the class knows how to count their coins and make change!
Christmas Gift Ideas – We will be learning how to tell time up to five minutes.  A good gift would be a watch with a dial face. Another suggestion is keyboarding software to help your child to be a good typist.  Other suggestions include books, journals, and science kits.
Scholastic Book Fair – Speaking of good Christmas gifts, you won’t want to miss out on the book fair in the library this week, Dec. 7 – 11th.  See the attached flier for a special event on Tuesday morning for parents.
Christmas Holiday Craft Stations – On the afternoon of Thursday, Dec. 17th we will have our Christmas celebration.  The students will be rotating to five different stations where they will make holiday crafts and gifts for their family and friends. Please send by Monday the 11th so I’ll know what I need to go out and get.  Each child will need a white pillowcase.  Suzette Alack found some for $1.00.  You can either send one from home or send in $1 to reimburse Mrs. Alack (they will be painted so you won’t be able to reuse it as a pillowcase).
Second Grade Christmas Traditions – We have some very special traditions in second grade.  We don’t have a “party” per se, our celebration is our afternoon of craft/gift making (12-17).  We don’t “exchange gifts” instead we brought 23 items to the $hopping $pree (12-4).  We invite families to come and sing with us at the school sing-a-long in the library (12-18) and then to stay afterwards as we share family holiday traditions. At some point during the last week of school the second graders will throw a “thank you” party for the seventh graders who are helping them with their holiday projects.
Christmas Sing-A-Long and Presentation of our Christmas Traditions – Immediately following the Christmas sing-a-long (Dec. 18th 7:45) we will meet in the story theater and share our Christmas traditions with you. Reading – We are finished with the reader for the first semester of second grade.  We will wait until 2010 to begin the second reader.  This week we will take the Theme 3 test.  We will spend the next two weeks reviewing skills we have learned thus far.

                                         Reports

Accelerated Reader (AR) Student Record Report – Attached you will find the tests your child has taken in the last three weeks.  I read five books aloud that were tested.  Your child should have taken a minimum of six other tests (or 3 chapter books). The read aloud for last week was Legend of Papa Noel. I will no longer take the liberty to delete a test unless requested by the parent.  If you have signed up for Home Connect, you are getting reports on tests taken daily as the students take the test.  I don’t mind deleting a test as long as your child has enough other tests or if your child will reread the book.  I will not delete the test that I have read aloud unless you request it and your child rereads the book.  Your child needs to take three tests (1 chapter book counts for two picture books) independently this week.

                                 Announcements
Kind Kid – Congratulations to Betron Lucas.   He has completed a “I’m a Kind Kid” chart. We applaud his acts of kindness.
Accelerated Reader 100 Point Club – Congratulations to Jaii Crockerham.  She is the first member of the 100 Point Club in second grade.  This is quite an accomplishment!
Accelerated Reader 50 Point Club – Congratulations to Khobe Tate.  He is the newest member of the school 50 Point Club and will be going on the AR field trip in the spring.
Math Facts in a Flash – We are now working on the 11 facts.  Please continue to drill these flash cards: 10 + 1 = 11, 1 + 10 = 11, 9 + 2 = 11, 2 + 9 = 11, 8 + 3 = 11, 3 + 8 = 11, 7 + 4 = 11, 4 + 7 = 11, 6 + 5 = 11, 5 + 6 = 11, and the related subtraction: 11 – 10, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7, 11-6, 11-5, 11-4, 11-3, 11-2, 11- 1.  It may seem like a lot but we learn it as a fact family.  If they know 5 + 6 = 11, then they also know 6 + 5 = 11 and 11 – 5 = 6 and 11 – 6 = 5.  If you teach/learn it that way they only have five facts to learn! The timed test will be on this Wednesday,Dec. 2nd.  We will then take another one on the same facts on the next Wednesday, Dec. 9th and I’ll count the best grade of the two.  We will continue to do our math homework in school this week so you have extra time each night to practice your facts.
My Skills Tutor – You can decide how many skills to do in a week.   I suggest that you do at least three in language and three in math.  Students who complete all 2nd grade skills will be assigned the 3rd grade skills! We will have a bulletin board to recognize these accelerated students.
$hopping $pree – As a culmination activity to our two week study of money, we will have a shopping spree on Friday, December 4th.  Please send to school 23 items that we can sell at the shopping spree by Thursday the 3rd.  It can be candy, novelty toys,  holiday items or it can even be hand made cards or bookmarks.  Each child will have to show the price of each item with coins in order to “buy” that item.  We also need some cashiers to help.  This is a great activity for grandparents.  I don’t know who has the most fun every year, the children or the cashiers!  The shopping spree will be in the library at 1:00.  Please send your child with the following real money to shop with: three quarters, five dimes, five nickels, ten pennies (half-dollar – optional) in a wallet or coin purse.  I hope you can join us for this fun afternoon of shopping.
Christmas Gift Ideas – We will soon be learning how to tell time up to the five minutes.  A good gift would be a watch with a dial face.  Another suggestion is keyboarding software to help your child to be a good typist.  Other suggestions include books, journals, and science kits.
Scholastic Book Fair – Speaking of good Christmas gifts, you won’t want to miss out on the book fair in the library next week, Dec. 7 – 11th.
Some of the items we need are: peanut butter, ribbon, nuts, holiday m&ms, seasonal candy, potpourri, bird seed, holiday Ziplocs, cloth markers/paints.   Send any of the above items (not all of them – just one or two) and I’ll update the list next week.
We don’t “exchange gifts” instead we bring the 23 items to the $hopping $pree (12-4).  We invite families to come and sing with us at the school sing-a-long in the library (12-18) and then to stay afterwards as we share family holiday traditions.
I hope you can attend. You child is buddied up with a seventh grader to help him/her with this project.
Endangered Animals – We will be starting this project when we return to school in 2010.  However, many children are telling me what animals they want to do.  Please send me a note letting me know if you already know what animal your child wants to help.  I would hate for them to get a stuffed manatee for Christmas and then to find out that someone is already doing that animal.  Animals chosen so far are the manatee, grizzly bear, polar bear, panda, tiger shark, Bengal tiger, bald eagle and the sea turtle.

Assessment

AR  –  For this six weeks, there will be two AR grades.  One will be at the end of three weeks (Dec. 4th) and the other one will be at the end of the six weeks (Dec. 18th).

                                                         Reports
Star Reading Parent Report – This is the report that establishes your child’s zpd (zone of proximal development) in Accelerated Reader.  The last test was taken in mid September.  I have written on the report the previous zpd so you can see your child’s growth.  Don’t be concerned if you see little or no growth – this is just one measure.  The students who showed the most growth were the struggling readers.  This is a testament to the power of reading at home and reading in your correct zone!!  AR really does work!  Great job, families!!!

Accelerated Reader (AR) Student Record Report – For the week of Nov. 16 – 29th, students took the tests on  The Great Kapok Tree  and Thanksgiving on Thursday.  In addition to this book each student should have taken at least two other tests (or one chapter book).  Your child must take three tests (or one chapter book and one picture book) by him/herself this week.  I will no longer take the liberty to delete test unless requested by the parent.  If you have signed up for Home Connect, you are getting reports on tests taken daily as the students take the test.  I don’t mind deleting a test as long as your child has enough other tests or if your child will reread the book.  I will not delete the test that I have read aloud unless you request it and your child rereads the book.

Accelerated Reader 25 Point Club – Congratulations to Kylar Dorsa.  He is the newest member of the class 25 Point Club.
Math Facts in a Flash – The class did a very good job on the first timed test.  We are now moving on the 11 facts.  Please pull out these flash cards to drill: 10 + 1 = 11, 1 + 10 = 11, 9 + 2 = 11, 2 + 9 = 11, 8 + 3 = 11, 3 + 8 = 11, 7 + 4 = 11, 4 + 7 = 11, 6 + 5 = 11, 5 + 6 = 11, and the related subtraction: 11 – 10, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7, 11-6, 11-5, 11-4, 11-3, 11-2, 11- 1.  It may seem like a lot but we learn it as a fact family.  If they know 5 + 6 = 11, then they also know 6 + 5 = 11 and 11 – 5 = 6 and 11 – 6 = 5.  If you teach/learn it that way they only have five facts to learn! Honor Roll – Please check our website for a list of second grade honor roll students.
My Skills Tutor – I am very proud of the progress of the class.  Dr. Ukpolo has studied report card grades and other assessments and she has assigned some children either beg(for beginning) or tutorial skills.  You can decide how many skills to do in a week.
Beta Club Food Drive – Please send items to school by Wednesday, Nov. 18th.
Christmas gift ideas – We will soon be learning how to tell time up to the five minutes.  A good gift would be a watch with a dial face.  Another suggestion is keyboarding software to help your child to be a good typist.  Of course, books are always on the top of the list.
Christmas Holiday Craft Stations – On the afternoon of Thursday, Dec. 17th we will have our Christmas celebration.  The students will be rotating to five different stations where they will make holiday crafts and gifts for their family and friends.  We need some volunteers to help (contact Suzette Alack) and soon I will be sending home a list of items we will need.
Christmas/Holiday Traditions – Our class will be working on a special Christmas/Holiday traditions project.  It is in abc format.  Attached you will find a page to record your special traditions.  You only need to fill out the letters that have specific meaning for your family.  Your child will be able to fill out the other letters.  We are trying to personalize this project so we are asking you to fill out those traditions that are unique or special for your family.  For instance is your family always sends out a family photograph/card then you can put that on the “p” line.  If your family likes to leave carrots for the reindeer you can put that on the “c” line.  Please try to come up with at least eight items that are special to you.  It is great to try and include members of your family.  This is due the Monday we return from Thanksgiving break, November 30th. So as you pull out your holiday decorations or meet with your family over the Thanksgiving holidays you can think about how your family celebrates the Christmas holidays.  Remember, you don’t need to fill out every letter, just the ones that have special meaning for your family.
Christmas Sing-A-Long and presentation of our Christmas Traditions – Immediately following the Christmas sing-a-long (Dec. 18th 7:45) we will meet in the story theater and share our Christmas traditions with you. I hope you can attend.
Cooking Up a Storm – Your child is coming home today with our 2nd grade cookbooks.  I hope you enjoy them 
Endangered Animals – We will be starting this project when we return to school in 2010.  However, many children are telling me what animals they want to do.  Please send me a note letting me know if you already know what animal your child wants to help.  I would hate for them to get a stuffed manatee for Christmas and then to find out that someone is already doing that animal.  So far the only animal that has been officially selected by a parent is the grizzly bear (Kylar).

Beta Club Food Drive – Please send items to school November 11th – 18th.
Episcleritis – No, it’s not the spelling bonus word.  It is a condition that I have in my right eye.  It is not contagious or painful and it is not caused from too much reading.  So if you see me with a red eye, don’t worry, it’s not pink eye and I haven’t pulled a late night! I have steroid drops but I hate to use them indefinitely so I will probably stop using them and just have to adjust to life with a red eye.

Library Book Week – The school will be celebrating Book Week the week of Nov. 2 – 6th.  There will be activities all week with the culmination on Friday with Family Reading and the Book Week Program.  It has been the second grade tradition to parade as book characters for the program.  This year students will have an option of parading as a book character or as a “wild thing” (Where the Wild Things Are). Every child will be required to participate for a grade.  Your costume can be very simple and could involve props more so than an actual costume.  It must be a book you have read or are reading.  It must have been a book first (yes, there are Spiderman books but the cartoon character came first).  There will be bonus points if the character is from a chapter book. If you need help coming up with a character, I can help you.   Look on our website under photo gallery for the Book Characters from last year. Please let me know by this Friday who your will be.
Writing Revision – We will not do a writing revision for the next two weeks.  Use this time to develop your book character costume.

Sweet Home Museum Folklife Days Festival and Camp Moore Museum Field Trip – Friday, Oct. 24th.  – Field trip forms are due Tuesday.  Be sure to let me know your lunch choice.
Downtown Hammond Historical Walking Tour – Wed. Oct. 28th
Students will receive their assignments and 6th grade buddy today or tomorrow.  The 6th grader is doing the research.  They will assign your child two sentences.  Your child can either learn the information or read it from an index card.  We will have a picnic lunch in Cate Square and our walk will take us as far as the Peter Hammond Oak on E. Charles Street.  You are welcome to join us for the day or you can meet us at Cate Square for lunch.  We are in need of a parent who can come to school and load up all the lunches and meet us at Cate Square.  Look for this field trip form coming home this week.
Visiting Author – Mike Artell – Oct. 30th We are so fortunate at our school to have a visiting author come to meet our students.  You will want to get a book and have it autographed for your child.  This is a priceless treasure to be handed down to your grandchildren   You’ll be getting more information from Ms. Shawn about times and book prices.
Lab School Cookbooks – Recipes are due Oct. 20th.   (Don’t confuse this with the kid recipe that is our writing assignment.) If you don’t plan to buy the cookbook you can still submit a recipe.  I have only sent to the PTO recipes that were written on their official cookbook form.
Writing Assignment (recipe) –  Attached to this week’s assessment is your child’s rough draft (edited) and thinking map.  Remember that the final grade reflects the entire writing process.  Recipes are due Friday.  We will use the recipes to compile a 2nd Grade Cookbook.  If you happen to have access to copies and can help make some copies, please let me know.  I have a limit of copies and paper per month and I’m always running out so if you can help with copies or paper that would be so very kind.
Fun Friday – Take a look at our class website and see just how much we learn on Fun Fridays.  Look under the photo gallery for Strong Buffalo and Chemistry with Dr. Voegel.  Yes, we are learning on Fridays (while we have fun)!
Veterans Day – Second grade will have a special part in the Veterans Day Program on Thursday November 12th.  They will say “Thank You” in different languages/ways.  Not all of the class will participate;  it is optional and up to you.  I would like all the students who have a guest coming to have a part in the presentation.  Each child who participates needs to learn their part and wear a simple costume/hat/sash or hold a flag.  If you would like your child to say “Thank You” at the program, let me know. If you don’t know of a language or idea, just send me a note and I can help.   I have lots of ideas.
Where the Wild Things Are (movie) – Clint (my great nephew, age 11) and I are going to see the movie soon and will let you know when we are going.  THIS IS NOT A SCHOOL SANCTIONED OR SPONSORED EVENT.  We will probably go on a Tuesday at 5:00.  We’re trying to find out if it’ll still be playing on Nov. 3rd.  I’ll send an email when we confirm the day and time.   I am not responsible for any children – your child must be supervised by an adult.  Parents can get together and work out supervision.  This is strictly a social event and optional.  (You won’t have homework if you come.)  We will be reading this book this week in class and taking AR test on Wednesday.
Every child will be required to participate.
Math Facts in a Flash – Second grade is going to start focusing on memorizing our math facts.  We will begin to take timed tests every Wednesday.  There will be 20 problems and 8 minutes to solve them.  The first timed test will be on the facts up to 10 and will be on Wednesday, November 11th. The best way to learn the facts is to practice with flash cards.  I will be sending flash cards and directions home this week so you can practice.  Students coming into 2nd grade should know their facts up to 10 (without counting on fingers). The PTO has purchased a special program call Math Facts in a Flash.  It is another great way to practice facts.   We worked on this in the computer lab last week and it is available at home.  I have attached the Renaissance Home Connect letter which gives you directions.  This is the same letter I have sent home before.  It is the way to monitor your child’s AR progress.  If you sign up for email, it’ll actually email you during the day so you know what tests are taken as they happen and the results!

Reports

Accelerated Reader (AR) Student Report – These books should be recorded in your reading log.  This report shows the tests taken last week. The % correct will be recorded as a test grade next Friday. If your child is reading below grade level an adjustment will be made in the test grade. Last week the following two books were read aloud to the class: Click Clack Moo and Dooby Dooby Moo.  In addition to these two books each student should have taken at least three other tests (or one chapter book).  Your child must take two tests this week.

2nd Grade Newsletter ~ October 5, 2009

                              Announcements
Kind Kids – Congratulations to Betron Lucas, Kylar Dorsa, and Madison Palomino. Each of these students has completed a “ I’m a Kind Kid” chart.  We applaud their acts of kindness.
Accelerated Reader 10 Point Club – Congratulations to Sarah Stant and Leah Benfield. They are the newest members of the AR 10 Point Club.
Accelerated Reader - Please note your child’s zpd (zone of proximal development).  This is the reading level your child should be selecting books for optimal growth in reading.  Your child will receive a biweekly AR grade.  This will be based on the % correct of books read in your child’s zpd during a two week period. Adjustments will be made if your child is reading below grade level. Students are required to read at least three picture books or one chapter book a week in their zone.  For students who have very high zones (3.0+) I still allow them to occasionally read 2nd grade picture books (2.2 or higher – this means second grade second month of school).  I don’t want them to miss out on some great books or be penalized because their reading level is so high.
Matilda Diorama – We are now reading the book Matilda by Raold Dahl. We are studying the story element of “setting”.  Each child is encouraged to make a diorama, which is a 3-D scene in a box.  The scene should realistically depict a scene from the book (not the movie but from the book).  You can see last year’s samples on the website.  Dioramas are due on Oct. 26th – Oct. 30th. You can turn them in any time that week of school.  Dioramas are designed to be a fun project for you and your child.  They will not be graded; instead your child will earn free homework passes.  Here is the rubric:

Sweet Home Museum Folklife Days Festival and Camp Moore Museum Field Trip – Friday, Oct. 24th.  Our class is planning to visit the African American Folklife Festival in Kentwood and Camp Moore Confederate Museum on Friday, Oct. 24th.  Background:  Mrs. Fochia Wilson, the curator of the Sweet Home Museum and founder of the folklife festival is a prominent leader of the Kentwood community.  She was my first principal when I began my teaching career at Kentwood Elementary.  We have remained close friends all these years.  I feel it is important for our students to understand the history of African Americans in Tangipahoa Parish.  A field trip permission form and more information will be forthcoming.
Scholastic Book Club – You can either send in a check for the book order or you may order online.   If you order online our class will receive a free book. Reports

Accelerated Reader (AR) Student Report – These books should be recorded in your reading log.  This report only shows the tests taken last week.  This Friday I will print out a biweekly report.  The % correct will be recorded as a test grade. If your child is reading below grade level an adjustment will be made in the test grade. I read The Stupids Take Off to the class and the counselor read Mr. Peabody’s Apples.  Your child should have two additional picture books (3 is required but since it was a short week I’m only requiring two) or one chapter book.  I will automatically delete the lowest grade if it is 60% or lower and your child has met the minimum requirements.  I will also delete a test if you request it (for valid reason).  I do not want to get in the habit of deleting tests.  The students need to be responsible for the tests they take.  Please sit with your child and discuss his/her zpd.  They should know this, it is taped to their desk and in their communication binder.  This is the zone that relates to the book levels your child should be reading.

Oct. 28th.  Your child will be paired with a sixth grader to research and report on a building or historical site in downtown Hammond.  The sixth grader will do the research part and your child will have two sentences to say when we reach his/her site on our tour.  We will have a picnic lunch in Cate Square and our walk will take us as far as the Peter Hammond Oak on E. Charles Street.  I am giving you the heads up in case you want to join us or if you have a sixth grader you would like to request to be your child’s buddy.  Also, if you have a personal interest in any building or site and would like to lay claim to it, just send me an email and I’ll make the arrangements.  This has always been one of the highlights of second grade at the Lab School.  Please notify me by Wednesday because assignments will be made this week.
Fun Friday – This Friday we will walk to Friendship Oak and then visit Dr. Voegel who will share “Chemistry Fun” with the class.
Report Cards and Honor Roll – Report cards are going home today.  Check our website for the Honor Roll.
School Photos – Attached to the assessment packet you will find information regarding upcoming school photos on Oct. 15th.

2nd Grade Newsletter

~ September 28, 2009

                              Announcements
Kind Kids – Congratulations to Jake Messina, Alexis Chatman, and Jacoab Dameron. Each of these students has completed a “ I’m a Kind Kid” chart.  We applaud their acts of kindness.
 is greatly appreciated.
Accelerated Reader (AR) 50 Point Club – Congratulations to Jaiia Crockerham.  She is the first member in the 50 Point Club.  She will be going on the AR field trip in the spring with Ms. Shawn.  My goal for 2nd graders is to reach 50 Points by April.  Can you believe this girl?  I am so proud 
Accelerated Reader 10 Point Club – Congratulations to Alexis Chatman, Kylar Dorsa and William Yang. They are the newest members of the AR 10 Point Club.
Accelerated Reader - Please note your child’s zpd (zone of proximal development).  This is the reading level your child should be selecting books for optimal growth in reading.  Beginning today (2nd 6 weeks), your child will receive a biweekly AR grade.  This will be based on the % correct of books read in your child’s zpd during a two week period.
-turned in on time = 1 HW pass
-name on box = 1 HW pass
-outside of box covered = 1 HW pass
-accurate to book (not movie) = 1 HW pass
-oral presentation = 2 HW passes
-neat and clean = 1 HW pass
-creativity = 2 HW passes
Total possible = 10 HW passes
Have fun and try to make it with items you already have at home, raid your toy box.  Please do NOT go and spend a fortune at Hobby Lobby!
Matilda the movie – The movie, “Matilda” is rated PG.  It is rated PG because the Trunchbull, the headmistress, is scary and aggressive.  In my opinion the movie is fine for second graders, however PG means parental guidance so I will need your approval if your child may view it with us.  Please indicate your permission on the weekly Assessment form that accompanies the tests for the week.
World’s Finest Chocolate Fundraiser – Wed. Sept. 23rd – Oct. 9th- Please support the PTO by participating in this important endeavor.  For each case sold, second graders will receive 5 Free Homework passes!  In addition, each child who sells a case will be able to attend a SUPER DUPER RECESS.  The more cases they sell, the more prizes they will receive.
Box Tops for Education and Community Coffee Labels – Please turn in labels by September 30th for the first contest.
Ordering online also gives you instant access to over 500 additional titles and discounts.  Go to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs      User Name: mrsturnerspageturners

www.mrs.turner.teachnology.com Check out our website for lots of photos including Friday at the Splash Pad. You will want to look at last years’ Matilda dioramas.

Matilda Diorama – We are now reading the book Matilda by Raold Dahl. We are studying the story element of “setting”.  Each child is required to make a diorama, which is a 3-D scene in a box.  The scene should realistically depict a scene from the book (not the movie but from the book).  You can see last year’s samples on the website.  Dioramas are due on Oct. 26th – Oct. 30th. World’s Finest Chocolate Fundraiser – Wed. Sept. 23rd – Oct. 9th- Please support the PTO by participating in this important endeavor.  Each family is encouraged to sell at least one case of candy.  If you do not want to fool with the candy (or if you are like me and don’t want the temptation around) please consider making a donation to the PTO instead. This is exactly what Kylar’s family did! This way you can still do your part and be a good citizen of our school community.  For each case sold, second graders will receive 5 Free Homework passes!  In addition, each child who sells a case will be able to attend a SUPER DUPER RECESS.  The more cases they sell, the more prizes they will receive.

Box Tops for Education and Community Coffee Labels – If your family is not in the habit of collecting these labels, please consider doing so.  You would be surprised how many items have the Box Top labels. When you are shopping, many times items will be the same price but one will have the Box Tops label.  It is a free way to support our school.  For every 10 labels a child brings in, they earn two Free Homework passes. Please turn in labels by September 30th for the first contest.

Dylan DePaula – We welcome our new student, Dylan DePaula.  He is taking Trey Floyd’s place.  Trey moved to a new school.

Assessment

Spelling –This was a special week of only ten words but all of them challenging to beginning second graders.  Twelve students scored “A+”, a few “B & C” but the rest were :”D or F”.  Since it was so challenging for many students, I didn’t want it to pull any grades down so I decided to count the grade only if it was better than the current spelling average.  So if your child came into last week with a “B” average and did not do well on the words, then their grade for last week was a  “B”.

Spelling Super Challenge Word – These extra words are words that just come up in the classroom.  They are not worth an extra point; you just get to kiss your brain for being smart.  Of course, it doesn’t count against you so you don’t even have to attempt it.

End of Six Weeks – This is the 6th week of school and the last week of the 1st grading period.  I will be grading journals and reading logs this week.

Accelerated Reader (AR) Student Report – These books should be recorded in your reading log.  Reading logs will be graded this week.

STAR Reading – This is the result of the reading test we took in the computer lab on Wednesday.  It is not a grade but an instrument to measure reading growth.

Kind Kids – Congratulations to Jaiia Crockerham, Nicholas
Le, Trey Floyd (2 charts!!) Betron Lucas and Jacob Dameron.
Each of these students has completed  “ I’m a Kind
Kid” chart.  We applaud their acts of kindness.
Kind Parents – Thanks to the Amber DeJean and Sheila Tate
for assisting us in the computer lab on Wednesday.
Thanks to Amber DeJean, Suzette Alack, Trey’s Aunt Amy,
Penny Perrin, Shawn Messina and Amy Acosta for helping with
 the Grandparent’s Day Bingo.
Accelerated Reader (AR) 25 Point Club – Congratulations
to Parker Layton, Jake Messina and Nicholas Le.  They
are the newest members of the 25 Point Club.
Accelerated Reader 10 Point Club – Congratulations to
Trey Floyd, Zannah Coffey, Cameron Ledford, Nathalia
Mendoza, Sophie Domingue and Madision Palomino. They are the
newest members of the AR 10 Point Club.
Star Posters – These posters are due this Wednesday the
 16th.
STAR Reading Test – We will retake this test on Wednesday
at 12:15.  This test will determine your child’s zpd
(zone of proximate development).  This is a book level
range that your child will be selecting AR books to
read.  At present, your child is allowed to test on any
books.  Beginning in two weeks the AR grade will be
based on tests taken in your child’s zpd.  This is
good news because it keeps your child from trying books that
are too hard and thereby resulting in a poor test grade.
STAR Math Test – You will find attached to the test
packet the results of the STAR Math test that we took in the
computer lab on Wednesday.  The results are much better
than the first time we took the test.  This is not a
test grade, just an instrument to measure growth.
Fun Friday at the Splash Pad – We will again attempt to
go to the North Oak Splash Pad on Friday.  In addition,
the Mendoza family (Adobe restaurant) will be catering our
lunch so you don’t need to send or pay for lunch on
Friday.  We will leave school @ 11:15.  Your child
will need a bathing suit, water shoes, towel, water and a
bag to put wet clothes in.
Writing Revision – This week the children wrote their
rough drafts in school after brainstorming ideas on a circle
map.  The topic was a pet.  We focused on the idea
that the topic sentence is what the main idea is, what the
entire paragraph is about.  They then had to write four
sentences with details supporting the topic. Finally, a
closing sentence or conclusion – this lets the reader know
you are finished by either restating the topic, expressing a
feeling or telling what was learned.  There should be a
total of 6 sentences (this is a minimum). Students rarely
get an “A” when they just give the minimum. As you help
your child with the revision, it is okay to help your child
improve the writing. In other words, you can encourage your
child to think of more descriptive language or to add
details without compromising your child’s original
thoughts.  It still needs to be their writing and in
their words.  The rough draft and thinking maps are
going home today.  They are due back on Friday.
Don’t forget to return the rough draft and thinking map
 with the final revision.
Spelling and Reading – Our spelling words come from our
reading program and every 5th week is designed as a review
week.  So instead of reviewing words we already know,
we move on to other words.  You will find that we only
have 10 spelling words this week and no new
 vocabulary.
Progress Reports – I don’t usually send this home
because you can go to Parent Command Center at any time and
check your child’s progress.  This week Dr. Ukpolo
sent them home for your information.  In some cases,
she wrote comments on them.  These are for your
information and there is no need to send them back.

 ANNOUNCEMENTS

Kind Kids – Congratulations to Julia Swank, Sarah Stant, Khobe Tate, Holly Beth Bordelon, Nicholas Le, and Nathalia Mendoza.  Each of these students has completed “I’m a Kind Kid” charts!!!

Kind Parents – Thanks to Amber DeJean for helping us in the computer lab on Wednesday.  Thanks to the Bordelons for more recess toys.  Thanks to the Mendozas for having oodles of refreshments for us at North Oak Park. Thanks to the adults who joined our walk on Friday: Amy Acosta, Lorett Swank, Kristi Ledford, Vernell Tate, Frances Crockerham, Amber DeJean, Leticia Mendoza, Shawn Messina and our student worker, Amber.

Accelerated Reader (AR) 25 Point Club – CONGRATULATIONS to Jaiia Crockerham and Holly Beth Bordelon!!!!  This is quite an accomplishment for just 3 weeks of school!!!!!

Accelerated Reader (AR) 10 Point Club – CONGRATULATIONS to Julia Swank, Khobe Tate, Daniel Acosta, Brendan Alack and Betron Lucas. They are our newest members of the 10 Point Club!

STAR Math Test – We will retake this test in the computer lab on Wednesday (Sept. 9th) at 12:15.  If you can come and help monitor the children that would be great!  We’ll take STAR Reading next Wednesday.

Renaissance Home Connect – This was sent home last week.  I hope you have had a chance to check it out.  You can check your child’s AR progress as well as go to Math and practice facts using Facts in a Flash.  If you select to setup Email, you will be sent emails showing your child’s quiz results.

Scholastic Book Club – Thank you for supporting our class library by purchasing books for your child.  You can go to arbookfind.com to see if these titles are Accelerated Reader. Book Orders are due TOMORROW - Sept. 9th

Writing Revision – Since this was the first writing assignment, I graded based solely on the final revision (we call this the “neat sheet”).  Usually, the grade is based on both the rough draft and the final revision.  Actually, since it is done for homework, every final revision should be an “A+”.  That is why the grade is normally based on the process from the beginning to the final product.  This week we will choose a pet to write about.  We will develop a thinking map and write our rough draft (we call this the “sloppy copy”).  Next week it will go home for the final revision.   It’s a two week process.

Star Posters – The posters that were given during Open House are due on Sept. 16th.  I will keep them so they are ready to display during your child’s star week.

Think Central – This is a great tool to help with reading. I emailed the instructions last week.  Let me know if you need them again.  In addition to being able to read the story at home without carrying the book, you can also get additional help in the Balancing Act  intervention workbook  and you can reinforce the phonic/spelling skill by use of the decodable books.  Check the links that are provided – there are more resources there than any student could ever need!  I particularly like : http://www.pcboe.net/les/elderweb/Second%20Grade.htm  You can get weekly vocabulary/spelling and question study guides!

Fun Friday – The Splash Pad was closed last week so we rescheduled for Sept. 18th.  The Mendoza family is catering our lunch.  Plan to join us if you can.

Grandparents/Pals Bingo – This Friday is the third annual Grandparents/Pals Bingo.  Since I am in charge of it, I will be there.  I will pair up all the second graders so they can all go and play.  If a grandparent can’t come and you can come and help with our class that would be great!
